Building Resilience: Strategies for Thriving Under Pressure

Building Resilience: Strategies for Thriving Under Pressure

In today's fast-paced business environment, resilience has become a crucial skill for professionals navigating constant challenges and high-pressure situations. For a long time, developing resilience primarily focused on longer-term strategies like maintaining healthy habits (a balanced diet, regular exercise, sleep, etc), planning (time management, organized work schedules / spaces, etc), and living a balanced life (disengagement from work, hobbies, etc.). Such practices were considered essential for building resilience. However, thanks to the work of experts like Jim Loehr, we now understand that whilst these are indeed, vitally important to our resilience and well-being, there are also smaller, more immediate actions we can take to develop resilience and support us during the difficult moments we face at work.

As an EQ practitioner and trainer, I have seen firsthand how integrating both types of strategies into our daily routines can make a significant difference in building resilience amidst everyday pressures.

The Roots of Effective Resilience Strategies

The concept of building resilience through small, intentional actions was influenced by insights from sports psychology, particularly through the work of Jim Loehr. Loehr’s contributions emphasized the mental and emotional aspects of performance, coining the term "mental toughness." His observations of tennis players revealed that while top-tier and lower-ranked players had similar broad strategies (like diet and rest), the key differences lay in their small, actionable steps employed during the game. These small actions and tweaks made a significant difference in their performance.

The lessons learned through Loehr's work extend beyond tennis and sports. The strategies he developed can help busy professionals manage stress and develop resilience to ensure they are “playing their best game” throughout the day, whatever their industry or sector and despite pressures, challenges, errors, and unexpected occurrences.

In-The-Moment Strategies for Building Resilience

I like to refer to the small-scale intentional actions we can take throughout the day "In-The-Moment strategies" and they involve minor shifts in our habits and thinking that can lead to major boosts throughout the day, especially during challenging situations. Here are a few in-the-moment strategies to protect productivity in difficult moments and to help build resilience:

  1. Watch Your Energy: Incorporate small breaks (to stretch, have some water, reframe our thinking) throughout your day to maintain your energy levels. For example, taking a five-minute walk or stretching between tasks can rejuvenate your focus and energy. Elite athletes use brief breaks to take deep breaths and refocus, and the same can apply to professionals facing back-to-back meetings.
  2. Focus: Use mindfulness exercises to clear mental clutter and enhance concentration. A quick, two-minute breathing exercise can help reset your mind and improve your focus on the task at hand. Visualization techniques can also be effective, imagining successful outcomes to maintain a positive mindset.
  3. Gratitude: Practicing gratitude can help shift your perspective during stressful situations. Keeping a journal and noting down things (people, situations, possessions, opportunities) you are thankful for each day can foster a positive mindset, much like how athletes use self-talk to maintain a positive outlook during high-pressure moments in their game.
  4. Create a Joy Kit: Assemble a "first aid kit" for your psychological and emotional wounds, often referred to as a "joy kit" containing items that bring you happiness or comfort, such as favourite snacks, inspirational quotes, notes written by people we care about, small items that bring positive memories and serve as a positive trigger. This kit can be a quick pick-me-up during tough times, helping you regain your perspective and emotional balance, allowing you to carry on.

Longer-Term Strategies for Building Resilience

While in-the-moment actions can provide immediate relief and incremental improvements to our resilience, it is equally important to practice broader, long-term strategies that address our overall mindset and habits. These longer-term strategies lay the foundation for sustained resilience, ensuring that we are not just reacting to stress but proactively building a resilient mindset. In fact, it is when we practice both in-the-moment techniques and these comprehensive, longer-term strategies, that we can truly supercharge our resilience, creating a robust framework that supports our well-being in any situation, at work and elsewhere. Here are a few longer-term strategies to enhance overall well-being and develop resilience:

  1. Develop EQ and Self-Awareness: Invest time in understanding your emotions and reactions. Regularly practicing self-reflection and seeking feedback can help you improve your emotional intelligence, leading to better stress management and interpersonal relationships. The new “Inside Out 2” movie, (and the first) are great resources for developing emotional literacy and awareness.
  2. Ensure Adequate Sleep: Prioritize sleep as a fundamental aspect of your well-being. Establish a consistent sleep schedule and create a restful environment to improve the quality of your sleep, which is crucial for maintaining resilience.
  3. Pursue Hobbies: Engage in activities outside of work that bring you joy and relaxation. Hobbies can provide a mental break from professional stress and contribute to overall life satisfaction and resilience.
  4. Connect with Friends and Family: Cultivate and maintain strong personal relationships. Spending quality time with loved ones provides emotional support and helps buffer the impact of work-related stress

Building resilience is an ongoing process that requires both small, immediate in-the-moment actions and broader, longer-term practices. Bonnie St John and Allen Haines differentiate these as “micro-resilience” and “macro resilience,” and by implementing these strategies, we can create a work environment that not only withstands pressure but also thrives in the face of it. As Steve Maraboli said; "life doesn't get easier or more forgiving, we get stronger and more resilient,” and embracing these strategies will empower us to enhance our resilience and better navigate the pressure, stress and challenges we face.
